2002-03-13 . 3:50 p.m. - Ain't no sharks
«rusted & used . shiny & new»
I am Marcela's hunger for education.
Today, my Botany Lab professor decided that it was a perfect day for the Everglades. WHEEEEEEE! Since Jen didn't have any classes left for the day, she decided to come along with me.
The only directions to Shark Valley (our target location) we were given was that it was "less than 30 minutes west of campus." So, needless to say, Jen and I were getting a little antsy after we had driven 20 minutes and found no sign (literally) of Shark Valley. We did, however see a sign for "Coopertown Original Airboat Rides population 0008." I asked Jen to pull-over at the souvenier stand/quick mart (?) so I could get better directions. As I'm walking up to the place I notice Coopertown's entire population has congregated on the patio ... I'm am so moving there when I leave the dorms. I walk up to the guy who I assumed owns the place (as well as half of Coopertown) and ask him "Which way is Shark Valley?" I shit you nay, this was his reply: "Ain't no Sharks ... Ain't no Valleys." Click the link to hear my imitation of his thick hick accent. After some of my nervous laughter, he told me that it was 12 miles to the west.
All in all, it was pretty fun. Got to see some gators, some birds, some grass, some bugs ... one of my colleagues squashing those bugs with a stick. I think Jen almost fainted (serves her right for wearing jeans & a long sleeves), but she survived. We've decided we're going back so that we can take pictures of all the tacky signs we saw on the way. I'll write about that when it happens.
